Chef and co-owner of Bluestem and rye (Kansas City and Leawood) with his wife, Pastry Chef Megan Garrelts. Garrelts was the 2013 recipient of the James Beard Foundation “Best Chef: Midwest” award and was named one of the “Top 10 Best New Chefs” by Food & Wine in 2005. His restaurant Bluestem was a semifinalist for the 2017 James Beard Foundation “Outstanding Restaurant” award and has been nominated again for 2018.
Tuffy Stone is a 5-time world champion pitmaster, an acclaimed caterer, and an occasional reality television star. Dubbed the “Professor,” Tuffy’s legendary precision and obsession with the science of smoke make him one of the most influential people in barbecue. His professional barbecue team “Cool Smoke” has earned Grand Champion titles in nearly every major competition. Cool Smoke is the only team in history to have won the prestigious Jack Daniel’s Barbecue World Championship back-to-back and the only team to have won it three times. A classically-trained French chef, Tuffy has brought his take on the American classic cuisine to the prestigious James Beard House the past two years.
