In October Smithfield hosted a special celebration at the Piggly Wiggly Supermarket in Littleton, NC to present local resident Vernon Alston with his "Family Dream Vacation" Sweepstakes Grand Prize - a Family Cruise Vacation for ten on Royal Caribbean. Alston's family and friends were also present for the celebration.
Union Mission, a local food bank, was also present to receive a donation in Mr. Alston's name. The organization was chosen based on its long-standing support of the local community. Union Mission has been serving the community around Roanoke Rapids for fifty-six years, through a range of programs including a food pantry, prepared foods, an emergency shelter, clothing store and a long-term recovery program. The organization feeds hundreds of people every week and served almost 10,000 individuals in the second quarter of this year, alone.
"This celebration was a wonderful opportunity to give something back to the local community by way of the food bank," said Eric Esch, Smithfield's director of marketing. "It was also a terrific surprise for our sweepstakes winner."
"As a local supermarket, Piggly Wiggly prides itself on being a good neighbor," said Billy Matthews, Store Manager of the Piggly Wiggly in Littleton where Mr. Alston generally shops. "We offer our congratulations to Mr. Alston and were pleased to have the opportunity to recognize Union Mission for the essential role they play in our community."
