Entering The Contest

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Simply create your original recipe that uses at least one Smithfield eligible product of bacon, lunchmeat, smoked sausage, ham, smoked chops or fresh pork. The recipe must include no more than a total of ten (10) ingredients.

To enter, go to www.smithfield.com (the "Website") and submit your recipe using the online entry form. Fill in all information requested on the entry form completely and type your recipe in the space provided, listing each recipe ingredient (including garnishes) with specific flavor, exact measurements or weights, equipment with exact dimensions or sizes and complete preparation instructions. Garnishes are optional and should not be included in the total of the 10 ingredients. All entries must be submitted and received by 11:59 PM (eastern standard time) on September 30, 2008. Each entry must be submitted only once. Any entry submitted more than once will not be considered. Use of automated processes and devices to submit electronic entries are not permitted. Smithfield is not responsible for any changes or effects caused by the entrant’s computer system as a result of submitting electronic entries.

Only entries submitted via the electronic form provided on the Website will be accepted. For your entry to be eligible, you must provide all information required on the entry form on the Website. All submissions are required to click a radio button affirming that their recipe is original. If any entry is received without the radio button clicked, it will be deemed to be incomplete. Incomplete entries will be disqualified. Entries submitted via any other method, including but not limited to U.S. Postal Service, hand delivery, facsimile or other express delivery services, will NOT be accepted. Smithfield is not responsible for entries that cannot be processed due to phone, network, electronic or computer hardware or software failure, or technical failures of any kind.

Smithfield reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who tampers or attempts to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the contest or website; violates these Official Rules; or acts in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner at any time during the Contest, or with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. By submitting your recipe, you accept all Contest rules, including those not listed here that may be added at Smithfield’s sole discretion, and agree to be bound by the decisions of the judges, which will be final. You also agree that your recipe(s) becomes the sole property of Smithfield, and Smithfield expressly reserves the right to alter, edit, adapt, copyright, publish, transfer and/or use any or all of them, without compensation.

Original Recipe Judging

All entries must meet the requirements of the Contest. Recipes not meeting Contest entry criteria will be disqualified. Entries must be a newly created, original recipe of the contestant. An independent judging agency and home economists will screen all submissions for appropriate use of one eligible Smithfield product and select the finalist recipes according to the criteria outlined below:

  • Taste
  • Appearance
  • Consumer Appeal
  • Creativity

Judges will disqualify previously published recipes, including those obtained from cookbooks, magazines, food companies, major food or recipe websites, and winners in cooking contests, unless the recipe contains changes considered substantial by the judges in their sole discretion. Finalists will be required to certify, on information or belief, that their recipes are their original creation and have not been published or publicized and have not won a cooking contest. Final judging will be done by Paula Deen and a representative of Smithfield. Decisions of the judges are final for all matters relating to this Contest.

Finalist Selection

Ten (10) selected Finalists will be announced on the Website on November 10, 2008. Smithfield will also select three (3) alternates. Selected Finalists will be required to sign an affidavit of eligibility affirming compliance with all requirements of the contest including that the recipe is original and hasn’t been in any other recipe contests, a confidentiality agreement, and a liability release/assignment of rights and return within five (5) days of receipt of notification. Smithfield will advise Finalists of further Contest procedures and policies at this time, and all Finalists agree to comply with such procedures. Finalists may be required to make themselves available for promotional appearances during the Contest. If a Finalist becomes unable to compete for any reason, Smithfield will attempt to replace that Finalist with an alternate, provided that the alternate can comply with the conditions stated above. If no alternate can comply by that date, the Finalist(s) will not be replaced. Smithfield reserves the right to cancel this promotion at its sole discretion.

Grand Prize and People's Choice Winner Selection

From the ten (10) Finalists, one (1) Grand Prize winner will be chosen by Paula Deen and Smithfield on or about January 15, 2009. The Grand Prize winner will be ineligible for the People’s Choice Award. From the remaining nine (9) Finalists, excluding the Grand Prize winner, one (1) People’s Choice Award winner will be selected by public vote on or about January 15, 2009. The People’s Choice Award winner will be selected by a vote of those individuals who have registered on the Website with a valid email address. You must have a valid email address to vote. Only one vote is allowed per valid email address. Submissions of multiple votes from the same email address will result in disqualification for all votes received from that email address. If the Grand Prize winner receives the most votes, the Finalist with the second highest vote total will be deemed to be the winner of the People’s Choice Award. The voting will begin on November 11, 2008 at 10:00 AM (eastern standard time) and end on January 13, 2009 at 11:59 PM (eastern standard time). All votes must be submitted prior to January 13, 2009 at 11:59 PM (eastern standard time).
