Look around at thrift stores, garage sales, or discount stores for a large picture frame. Then, with a trip to the hobby/arts and crafts store, you can find all the supplies you need to put this clever reminder board together. Turn it into a chore chart, and they will enthusiastically check it daily for assignments. A homework chart will make it easy to manage their after-school time and check off what they’ve accomplished.
1. Measure the width and height of the back of the picture frame where the glass would fit into the frame. Place the acrylic on a safe cutting surface, and draw lines to mark the width and height. Score lines with a utility knife several times until the acrylic easily breaks off to make a smooth edge.
2. Cut the piece of mat board in the same manner.
3. Spray one side of the acrylic sheet with 2 coats of chalkboard paint, allowing it to dry between coats.
4. Using the frame as a guide, measure off 2 1/2- to 3 inches from the edges of the acrylic so you can paint a mat on the chalkboard surface that will show just inside the frame. Take into account the amount of frame that will cover the painted mat.
5. Place painter’s tape on the chalkboard surface to mark the painted mat area. Paint the mat with 2 coats of acrylic paint, allowing the first coat to dry before adding the second. While the second coat is still wet, carefully peel off the painter’s tape and allow the paint to dry completely.
6. Decorate the mat with paints or stickers.
7. Fit the chalkboard surface into the frame back, then place the mat board on top. Tape the mat board securely to the back of the frame.
8. Use the frame’s hanging hardware to hang on the wall. Use chalk and a sponge or chalkboard eraser for writing and erasing.
